Spot
-------------------------------
| I was looking for
something to do and didn't want to spend any money, so I went out to my workshop to see what i could find. I came across this. |
|
| This
was supposed to be my 3rd pumpkin, since I had 2 already I decided to use this. Now what to make. I looked around and found some PVC and a few other items...... I can build a spider!! So off I went. I started by trimming this down a bit, removed bottom layer and sanded it smooth. I then gave it a good coat of monster mud. let that dry, sanded that, then Gave it 2 coats of black paint with a sanding between coats. |
|
| Now
on to the head. I started out with a block of foam I had, but after shaping it I didn't like it. So I tossed it and started hunting for something else and I came across this. A very sad looking foam pumpkin I salvaged. I was going to clean it up and repaint it but hey it'll still look great as a spiders head! LOL I peeled off the orange skin, then trimmed off all but 2 of the ridges/bumps. Then gave it a good sanding and repeated the steps I did to the body. |
|
| Next
the legs due to the odd lengths of PVC I had, I needed to cut it up into sections so I could have an even 8 legs I used 3/4" and 1/2" pvc. I took 4 pieces( 3/4"), drilled 2 holes in each ran a section of dowel through, then glued it all together. I first of course grabbed my heat gun and bent the ends of each section up in to the desired direction. The little gray pieces are to help me attach the 3/4" sections together. The tips of the 1/2" sections have been ground down a little to insert into the ends of the 3/4" sections. Any point where 3/4" meets 1/2" I sanded down so there was no odd looking connections. |
|
| Here
I had some of those handles from those disposable foam paint brushes. I heated up the ends of the pvc put in dowel, squeezed the pvc together, when it cooled I glued dowel in place and ground down the tip and smoothed out the pvc to match. |
|
| Here
you can see what I did to the head and have started bending the next joint in the legs. Also test fitting the body. |
|
| Here
I am finished with the legs and testing the fit of the body again. To get her to stand off the ground, I put her on a bucket to make the last joint. heating each section until it slowly fell to the floor. As you can see from the burn marks it took a bit of coaxing! LOL |
|
| Next
the pinchers, I took a piece of foam and sanded it round, I had some teeth from a necklace and inserted one into each tip. Then painted them black. |
|
| To
attach pinchers, I ran a piece of wire into the back of the pincher then drill a hole in each of the dowels in the frame inserted wire and glued it there. |
|
| To
make the eyes I had a couple of copper colored ornaments which I cut the eyes out of trimmed them a little then glued onto face. For the mouth I took 2 sets of those plastic vampire teeth, cut them into sections and glued them together then glued to face. Painted the inside red adding a splash of purple mixed in. |
|
| I
attached the body to the legs with bamboo skewers, hotglue and gorilla glue. |
|
| The
paint job was fairly simple. After painting everything black, I painted the joints purple. The design on her body I have sorta looks like flames running down the middle and then spots on the rest of her body. Although you can't really tell from the pics, I toned down the spots with a dusting of black paint, then I dusted her with a very light coat of purple. To me it looks kinda cool she has a light purple hew during the day, then at night almost totally black. From tip to tip she is 5ft wide and her height is 22 inches. |
